Some People LOVE to HATE Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day.

You either love it.  Or you hate it.

Personally, I hate it.  But we'll get into that later.

Because although I hate Valentine's Day, what I truly hate.  Are the people who LOVE to HATE Valentine's Day.

You know who I'm talking about.  The people that will not shut up about how crappy V-Day is and how cliche and commercial it is.

You know.  The people that are ALMOST as annoying as the gushy one's who won't shut up about how much sweet stuff their significant other is doing for them.

Here's my issue with Valentine's Day.  Yes it's a commercial whore of a holiday.  I get it.  That's not my big beef.

My big beef is the people that go to elaborate extremes for V-Day and use it as an opportunity to get a clean slate for all the crap they've done during the year.

I'm sorry but over priced roses, doesn't fix a shitty relationship.

And honestly, the fact that you only think to do stuff like this on Valentine's Day makes me question if there is any real sincerity to the actions.  I mean are you buying your girlfriend flowers because she deserves a nice treat or are you doing it because it's what is socially expected of you?

I could go on and on but then I'd become one of the people that annoy everyone with how vocally anti V-Day they are.

I get it.  Valentine's Day is shit.

You're single.   You feel like this is the one day a year along with New Years Eve that is created just to make you feel shitty about your single status.

I GET IT.

But honestly?  Shut up about it.  Because with all your bitching and ranting about how horrible V-Day is, all anyone is thinking is that you're bitter.  You could have very legitimate views on V-Day but if you're single and ranting about it, all anyone is thinking is that it's a smoke screen to cover up how much you secretly want flowers.

Trust me.  I get it.  I'm single too remember?

So trust me when I say that ranting isn't doing you any favours.

That in mind.  Enjoy it.  It's a cheesy holiday but if you get flowers of a Valentine from a loved one.  Enjoy it and giggle inside like the 13 year old girl we all secretly are.

Hugs and Kisses,

Ash

Obligatory Cat Picture for Wendy who lovingly pointed out that I had neglected to include one.

  1. I in no celebrate valentines day with my husband of 20 years because I feel if I need a special day to to tell him I love him then I shouldn't be with him. However I do like to tell those that I don't get to see all the time how much I love and miss them.

  3. We celebrate Valentine's Day by eating McDonald's. True story. I love flowers, but I much prefer to get them on other occasions (or for no reason at all.) Of course, Jim doesn't HAVE to be my Valentine... Aaaaaaaaash... Be mine? XOXO

    1. LOL That's a cute tradition. A friend of mine always gets his wife roses the week after Valentine's Day because she gets pissed if he spends triple the amount for them on the 14th.

You are totally my book nerd Valentine. xoxoxoxo

    2. And it's all because they forgot to make reservations their first Valentine's Day together. I remember it well.

  4. Cheers to this. I'm indifferent to the holiday anymore, and even when I was paired up, I felt pretty much the same way. :)

    1. I've always been indifferent to it. I get the appeal and I can also relate to the people that hate it. I'm just sick of it being jammed down my throat.

  5. So anyways, I wish Brian would buy me flowers. Any other day. The closest thing I've gotten was a poinsettia when I was having a shit day. My practical boyfriend prefers to send me phone chargers and electronic books. Can you blame him?

Also, I know for a fact that he only does something for VD because of what society thinks. ;-)

    1. He should totally buy you flowers at least once a year. Even Birthday's are nice! Honestly, I'd be more happy with eBooks too. My mom won't let my dad buy her flowers because they die so he buys her plants for her garden.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh you've spread the VD to my blog!!!!

    2. Hey...you ASKED for the VD. You brought it up...and I mean really...once you interact with The Clap...it's yours for life.

  6. I persoanlly don't care for Valentine's Day but I don't complain about it. I have had girls night with my single complaining friends or just had a normal evening home with my cats. My girlfriends don't understand how I am so comfortable being single on that day or any day for that.
I think the hallmark holiday is way to hyped and personally I would prefer if my guy (whenever that happens) would remember my birthday which is 2 weeks later. That is when I would like flowers or a gift. Thank you :)

    1. I've done the girls night thing as well. A friend of mine broke up with her bf a few weeks before V-Day a few years ago and she didn't want to be alone so we drank copious amounts of wine and watched cheesy movies.

      Happy Birthday!!

      My mom's is the 22nd!!

  7. Never liked this holiday - single or not. I can harp on it a little bit only because I HATE how to it makes single people feel like shit and the angst that goes into it when you're in a relationship. I also would be annoyed if they spent way more money on flowers just because it was V-day vs. just any other random day (assuming it was OUR money and it was coming out of the same bank account :)). The boyfriend was saying he asked a girl he knows if she'd rather her bf be a total asshole all the other days of the year and then go totally balls to the wall on V Day - like totally crazy and spend lots of money and put lots of thought into it - this idiot said she'd rather a crazy VDay... I just think VDay isn't genuine. If you want to buy me flowers, do it because you thought of it, not because Hallmark did.

    1. I never liked it either because it always seems forced.

Ok that chick is an idiot. V-Day is all about the showmanship so insecure women can brag to their friends about what their bf's did for them.

    2. Exactly Ash, you definitely nailed it. Although, they don't even need to be insecure, they can also just be catty show-offs lol.

I've never really cared for Valentine's day. I don't hate it and I'm totally cool with people who celebrate it, but, ya know, it's just a day :-D

    3. I'm there with ya. I have a friend that throws a fit if her boyfriend doesn't do something for her on Valentine's Day. I'm like... give me a Costco-size jar of Jelly Bellys and I'm happy, any day of the year.

    4. OMG do they MAKE Costco-sized Jars of Jelly Belly's?

    5. Forcing men to be romantic is an ill-gotten victory, in my opinion. I'd rather have a guy show me he cares the other 364 days of the year.

My dad took my mom to Taco Bell for dinner tonight. <3

  8. Well Happy Birthday to your mom. Mine is March 4th. But thank you :)

Yes this year me and my gf are going out for desert and wine...plus I have an extra few bottles for when we get home :)

  9. I like the line, 'use it as an opportunity to get a clean slate for all the crap they've done during the year.' So true for some people.

    1. Thanks. It's true. V-Day is totally not a get out of jail free card.

  10. Amen! I'm not a fan of Valentine's Day, but I'm not the bitter girl who goes around the office denouncing other people's roses as sell-outs to Hallmark. I pretend Valentine's Day is my birthday - I forget about calories, I watch a guilty-pleasure show or movie, and go to bed early.... all my favorite things!
